Woe…

Woe to you

In case you forgot that God has some warnings for all humanity about living selfishly and filled with pride…here are a few reminders:

  1. “Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field, until there is no more room, so that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!  (Isa 5:8)
  2. “Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue strong drink, who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them!” (Isa 5:11)
  3. “Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood, and sin as if with cart ropes.” (Isa 5:18)
  4. “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isa 5:20)
  5. “Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight!” (Isa 5:21)
  6. “Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and valiant men in mixing strong drink.”  (Isa 5:22)
  7. “Woe to those who enact evil statutes and to those who constantly record unjust decisions.”  (Isa 10:1)
  8. “Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is at the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!”  (Isa 28:1)
  9. “Woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord, and whose deeds are done in a dark place, and they say, “Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”  (Isa 29:15)
  10. “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!” (Isa 31:1)
  11. “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel.  Prophesy and say to those shepherds, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Woe, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves!  Should not the shepherds feed the flock?” (Eze. 34:2)
  12. “Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria, the distinguished men of the foremost of nations, to whom the house of Israel comes.” (Amos 6:1)
  13. “Woe to those who scheme iniquity, who work out evil on their beds!  When morning comes, they do it, for it is in the power of their hands.” (Micah 2:1)
  14. “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.”  (Matt 23:13)
  15. “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.” (Luke 11:52)
  16. “Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people.”  (Luke 21:23)
  17. “Then I looked, and I heard an eagle flying in mid-heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”  (Rev 8:13)

It’s pathetic to ignore the warnings of God.

Remember Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegon? I’m pretty sure it was satire on his distaste for any thing ‘religious,’ since as a kid, he professed faith. I think he chose the broad path….

WOE did’t sit too well it appears.

    Good post btw.

    • so true!

Also, I wanted to mention that the phrase “woe to those” isn’t so much a warning as much as it is a curse. Woe comes to those who don’t heed God’s message and avoid the things God hates.

      • It’s a dire warning…all of those scriptures you used. I think sometimes we forget that, while God loves us deeply and completely…He remains God. Does that make sense? I guess I mean we have lost some of the respect for the majesty and grandness of God. To us these days, He is “the man upstairs.”

        • Makes plenty of sense to me, but i’ve been a follower of Jesus and God the Father for years, so I understand who He is as God. There are far too many who don’t know or understand God’s plans or ways. He’s God, Almighty. The King of kings and Lord of lords, not just the “man upstairs,” and He has the right to hold us accountable for our actions and words.
